Bureau Chiefs: Colorado, New York
We’re seeking bureau chiefs who are seasoned journalists with management experience that will lead our coverage, with a focus on bottom-up reporting on the debate around how to create educational equity. This is a “player-coach” role, meaning you’ll be balancing both management of staff and your own reporting. You’ll oversee our reporting teams and are responsible for guiding our coverage decisions and priorities, working with reporters and senior editors to help shape stories on the front end so they connect to the important story Chalkbeat is telling across the country. You’ll also represent Chalkbeat at public events and build local community strategies.
We’re seeking a skilled early career reporter in the city of Detroit. Detroit’s schools are at the center of a national conversation about urban education, and you’ll cover this story at a pivotal moment for the city. You’ll primarily be responsible for conceiving and executing daily stories that help people understand how breaking news connects to the big picture, and how public policy decisions impact and connect to the people and institutions in Detroit. You’ll also lead our early childhood education coverage and cover English language learners, special education, and other issues facing students. You’ll collaborate with our product team as Chalkbeat comes up with innovative ways to present news and distribute stories. Finally, you’ll communicate and build relationships with readers and key players in the local community through our weekly newsletter, social media and the reporting process.
We’re seeking a story editor with digital experience to make our news stories sing. The story editor will be responsible for editing a mix of articles out of our five local bureaus. Stories will vary among news pieces, step-back analyses, and longer enterprise work, and each day will be different. You will work with the managing editor, digital producer, and local reporters to ready stories for publication on our website, and coordinate with the growth editor for social promotion. You will also work with the managing editor to help connect the dots across bureaus and ensure that Chalkbeat is telling a cohesive overarching story. The story editor will provide crucial perspective, adding regional or national context where needed and ensuring that stories read logically, adhere to Chalkbeat style, and are properly sourced. While each piece that comes across the transom is different, all of our stories taken together should add up to a coherent whole, and the story editor is essential to achieving that goal through a mix of line editing, copy editing, and pulled-back critical thinking.
2018 Summer Internship
We’re seeking motivated undergraduate or graduate students to serve as summer reporting interns at our five local bureaus, as well as our national bureau covering education issues affecting schools across the country. The 10-week paid internship from June-August 2018 will offer student journalists the opportunity to undertake daily education news assignments, to work on enterprise stories, and to participate in the life of our reporting teams in every way.
We’re seeking an Operations Assistant to support our our day-to-day operations and plan for rapid growth. We’re looking for someone who is excited to grow their skills in nonprofit operations and is willing to work on tasks big and small to further Chalkbeat’s expansion. Our ideal candidate views operations as a positive support to the organization’s mission, and never as a bureaucratic obstacle to serving the needs of our team. You’ll join a tightly-knit operations team responsible for talent, finance and systems development.
