Another challenge for the Adams 14 school district: filling a board vacancy

Already facing state intervention for poor academic performance and a transition in the superintendent’s office, the Adams 14 school district now must also fill a vacant board seat.

The Commerce City-based district is fielding applications after board member Robert Vashaw resigned this month following his arrest in Aurora on suspicion of trying to have sex with a child. Police confirmed at the time that no children from the district were involved.

The school board has 60 days to appoint another person to fill the seat on the five-member board. The person must have lived within the school district boundaries for at least a year.

The appointed board member would fill the seat until the term expires November 2017. At that time, the person would have to be elected by voters to continue serving.

The deadline for submitting a letter of interest along with other suggested materials such as two letters of support is Oct. 11. The board will conduct interviews at a special meeting on Oct. 18.

Adams 14 — which serves a large proportion of children living in poverty and learning English — is on the state’s accountability watchlist for persistent low student academic performance and is working with the state on a plan to turn things around at its high school and two elementary schools. A new superintendent, Javier Abrego, is at the helm.
