Briefs: Denver school tax meetings

Denver Public Schools on Monday kicked off three nights of community meetings about proposed tax increases for additional building and operating dollars.

Monday’s meeting was at Garden Place Academy, 4425 Lincoln St. in north Denver. Wednesday, a meeting is planned at Morey Middle School, 840 E. 14th Ave., in central Denver. Thursday’s meeting is in southwest Denver at Kepner Middle School, 911 S. Hazel Court.

All of the meetings are scheduled from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Language interpretation services will be provided.

Denver school board members are expected to decide Aug. 23 whether to place a pair of tax questions on the November ballot. One question seeks a $457 million bond issue to build and repair schools while the other questions asks for a $49 million increase for day-to-day operating costs.

Board members are divided over whether to seek the additional dollars, according to this EdNews story. The story includes links to recent board presentations about the tax proposals.

In addition, board members have scheduled two work sessions before their Aug. 23 meeting. One session is Wednesday at noon while the second session is Aug. 20 at 4:30 p.m. Both public work sessions are at DPS headquarters, 900 Grant St.

Agendas for the work sessions and the Aug. 23 meeting will be posted here when available.

Among the state’s largest school districts, both Jefferson County and Cherry Creek school boards have approved building and operating tax questions for the November ballot. Douglas County school board members have reserved space on the ballot but have declined to say what type of proposal they’re considering. And Aurora Public Schools board members are mulling whether to seek an increase for operating dollars.
