Monday Churn: Looking ahead

What’s churning:

The week’s big act probably will a 2 p.m. hearing on Thursday, when the Senate Education Committee will take testimony about the impact of budget cuts on Colorado school districts.

The hearing follows a dozen town hall meetings held across the state Saturday by Democratic lawmakers, who asked residents to “provide feedback and share their ideas, concerns and suggestions about the state’s challenging budget situation.”

Friday’s slightly-better-than-expected revenue forecast may ease next year’s proposed $332 million cut in K-12 funding a bit but it’s unlikely to prevent entirely the kinds of furloughs, job reductions and pay cuts being discussed in large metro-area districts including Jefferson County and Adams 12 Five-Star.

Thursday’s Senate Ed meeting is scheduled to be a three-hour affair, starting at 2 p.m. in the Old Supreme Court Chambers, the Capitol’s largest meeting room. Sen. Bob Bacon, D-Fort Collins and chair of Senate Ed, said, “This will be one of the first efforts to tell the media and the public of the precarious state of education in Colorado.”

Meanwhile, a long list of education bills is teed up for floor and committee action this week, including measures involving educator licensing, bullying, parent involvement in turnaround plans, charter facilities and more.
