Tuesday Churn: How big an ax?

What’s churning:

The Joint Budget Committee (and a room packed with other lawmakers, lobbyists, officials and others) will learn at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon just how Gov. John Hickenlooper proposes to close the $1.1 billion gap in next year’s state budget.

Word is that K-12 support could be cut no less than $165 million and perhaps $400 million or more. Higher education could be trimmed at least $50 million from what college leaders had been hoping to receive (background story).

EdNews will have full coverage later this afternoon, and we’ll be posting early updates on our Facebook page. The presentation will be in the Old Supreme Court Chambers on the second floor of the Capitol. You can listen live online here starting at 1:30 p.m.

What’s on tap:

The Aurora school board holds a public hearing starting at 6 p.m. at district headquarters, 1085 Peoria St. Hearing notice
